The 21st century bore a proliferation of waterproofing technologies in apparel production. Taped seams, polymer coatings, and later - a hydro-repulsor field generator adapted for exploratory missions to the water-bearing planets of the Pleiades system. However, in 1990 in a region then known as Germany, a military pattern maker conceived a protective jacket with no shoulder seams, enabling one continuous piece of waterproof fabric in the upper garment to protect the wearer from rain without the aforementioned technologies. The Carapace Jacket follows this cue, and adds a stowable hood inspired by segmented beetle shells.
